“War may sometimes be a necessary evil. But no matter how necessary, it is always an evil, never a good. We will not learn how to live together in peace by killing each other’s children.
The bond of our common humanity is stronger than the divisiveness of our fears and prejudices. God gives us the capacity for choice. We can choose to alleviate suffering. We can choose to work together for peace. We can make these changes – and we must.”
–Jimmy Carter Nobel Lecture, Oslo, (December 10, 2002)
Carter was far from being the worst of a strange bunch. (I often wonder how, of 333 million people, it seems so difficult to find one decent and capable leader.) But I wish he had said that no war is inevitable and all are both evil and unnecessary. All are man-made. Best wishes to you, Patrick. You are a voice of reason in an unreasonable world. Thanks.
Thank you very much, Robert. Best wishes to you and your family as well.
